Creative loafing
No, I didn’t need (to replace) another kitchen gadget. But I bought it anyway….

I had a bread machine, which I used to use quite often. Then, I got out of the habit — I think I had started using a no-knead recipe where the dough rises overnight in the refrigerator, and then baking it as a round loaf in a dutch oven, which gives you wonderful all-over browning. The bread machine went into the closet. Eventually, I got out of the bread-baking habit altogether.
I have not baked bread in some time — my oven has been on the fritz, and I’ve just been doing other culinary projects. Years ago, I had a sourdough starter for a while, but I completely missed out on last year’s pandemic sourdough craze.
Well, last weekend, I was at church with the youth group for a weekend-long event (a lock-in for them, although I got to sleep in my own bed). One of our projects, in keeping with the theme of the weekend and the remote content we were viewing, was baking some loaves of bread. My role, of course, was more watching and assisting than participating, although I probably made a nuisance of myself talking about my past bread-baking.
