Oil’s well that ends well

Akabanga Chili Oil stands apart from your run-of-the-mill hot sauce

This is not any sort of sponsored or compensated post. Products were purchased, by me, at regular prices.

In late 2019, as I was excitedly looking forward to a trip to Uganda in the summer of 2020, I ran across Akabanga Chili Oil on the web. I think I may have Googled “African hot sauce” or “Ugandan hot sauce,” although it’s also possible I just stumbled across a news story. I don’t recall clearly.

Akabanga is not from Uganda; it’s from Rwanda, just southwest of Uganda. It must be consumed in some parts of Uganda, however, because there was a lawsuit when some Ugandan businessmen tried to produce a counterfeit version of the product.

I ordered some Akabanga, which at the time had just opened a website for sales within the U.S. At the time, I could only find it in tiny little dropper bottles, and I ordered a three-pack.

I liked it, but the little dropper-bottles were leaky as all get-out, and for an oil-based condiment, that means they were messy to deal with and have around. It took me a while to finish them. The last one kind of bounced around.

Well, as I’ve posted about from time to time, my Uganda trip got postponed due to COVID, and it’s now been rescheduled…
