My off-the-cuff, completely unrequested quarantine viewing suggestions
Based on absolutely no popular demand, I thought I’d throw out a few comedy viewing suggestions to take your mind off of current events. These are all relatively mainstream, but things that I think might have escaped your attention. Most of them are available for online rental (or purchase) through Amazon and YouTube. You could watch them on your computer, of course, but the ideal would be a smart TV equipped with a platform like Roku, Amazon Fire Stick or Apple TV.
“Oscar” (1991)
In the 1980s and 1990s, like a lot of action stars, Sylvester Stallone tried to expand his appeal by dipping into comedy. His 1984 movie “Rhinestone” and the 1992 flick “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot” were notorious flops. “Oscar” was a flop, too — but in this case, I could never figure out why. It’s a hilarious ensemble comedy, and it makes perfect use of Stallone’s persona.
The movie is set in the 1930s. Angelo “Snaps” Provolone (Stallone) is a gangster who, before the opening credits, promises his dying father (Kirk Douglas!) that he will give up crime and go straight.
When we return from the credits, it’s the morning of what is to be Provolone’s first day as a legitimate businessman. He has arranged to invest in a bank, which he believes will establish him in society. He has hired a prissy diction coach (the always-funny Tim Curry) to teach him elocution, and two tailors (Harry Shearer and Martin Ferrero) to make him a suit…
